The CryoShed
Fifteen-year-old Patrick doesn't have any friends, because everyone at his school is an idiot. Home isn’t much better. His dad is an awful 'lad' who won't grow up, and his mum should have done better. Patrick decides to escape from it all by spending his summer on a secret project: building a cryogenic freezer in the shed and freezing himself for a hundred years, hopeful that in the future there will be fewer idiots around.
Almost as soon as the holidays start, things go awry when his dad's friend Barry turns up from Australia with his daughter, Lucy. She's Patrick's age and gorgeous and he's determined not to fall in love with her. The more they get to know each other the more they find they have in common, especially in the secrets they keep.
Over the summer the two of them get closer but everything comes collapsing around Patrick as the summer comes to an end but he has to finish The CryoShed no matter what because its made clear that his homelife is unliveable and his return to school is a horror he can’t let happen. The story’s climax see’s Patrick achieving his goals, just not how he imagined.
